Despite semi-annual declarations that it is “over,” (for real this time) camouflage is a fashion staple. Sure, its popularity means there is some slapdash product out there, but judiciously and artfully applied, camouflage has appeal far beyond the world of streetwear. All those clichés about a man in uniform weren’t referring to baggy sweatpants, after all.
It makes perfect sense that truly excellent camouflage is the product of skilled design. The modern origins of camouflage have an extensive fine arts background. This collaborative effort between Asics and noted customizer SBTG is the product of this artistic lineage.
SBTG takes turns the more familiar camouflage patterns into a sophisticated, elegant design. The colorway, which utilizes the classic shades of green and brown serves as the basis. An intricately detailed leaf camouflage design is applied to the upper, overlay panels, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The combination nylon/suede upper, quilted toebox, and Velcro patch tongue label, reminiscent of a military insignia patch, prove that the only stylistic limits to camouflage are in the wearer’s imagination.
