In classic mecha anime, 2018 was supposed to be the future. Watching humanity battle for survival against hostile entities that could only be combatted with giant robots was a situation, all things considered, that you as the viewer were glad to only be experiencing vicariously.
Now that we’ve actually made it to the future, it’s really difficult to not feel ripped off. It’s true that humanity appears locked in a desperate struggle to hold back the tide of existential disaster and irreversible decline, but stuff like social media conspiracy theories about early 2000s pop punk singers is infinitely less satisfying than Char showing up to wreck the Federation’s shop, or angels descending from the skies to tear up the geofront and kick off third impact.
Luckily, Asics and London boutique Foot Patrol have heard the cry for giant robot action, and have responded like Amuro stumbling across the RX-78 and taking out the Zeon crew. The classic Gel Saga runner combines a circa 1991 tonal white, mesh and suede build with gleaming metallic blue tiger stripes, a translucent outsole, terrycloth lining, and gas mask co-branding.
There’s only one thing to do at a time like this. Get in the robot.
