‘Lost In Translation’ is one of those movies that is both highly regarded critically and has a significant cult following. As the basis for a Gel Lyte V design by Extra Butter, it’s definitely ambitious, but it is ambition that pays huge dividends.
Extra Butter took their visual cues from one of the film’s most memorable scenes, Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson’s respective karaoke renditions of Roxy Music’s ‘More Than This,’ Elvis Costello’s ‘What’s So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding’ and The Pretenders’ ‘Brass In Pocket.’
The visual elements of the scene are expertly referenced throughout the shoe. The grey walls of the karaoke bar are the basis for the shoe’s upper, while a bright pink accent references the distinctive wig Scarlett Johansson wore during her karaoke performance. The eye catching patterns of the ornamental zebra print on the walls, and Bill Murray’s brightly colored camouflage t-shirt are represented in the inner lining of the shoe.
This is not only a worthy tribute to an excellent movie, but an outstanding shoe in its own right.
