Maybe it’s just society’s collective attention span being shortened by a barrage of short form information, lists, tweets, rapid news cycles, etc, but when it comes to deeming something “old school,” it seems like the barrier to entry is not altogether formidable. We get through so many flavors of the week that anything that’s been around for a little while gets to be old school.
X Large, however, is the real deal. 2016 marks their 25th anniversary, but they aren’t being celebrated just for sticking around. Boasting celebrity associations from the Beastie Boys, to Kim Gordon, to Chole Sevigny to Spike Jonze, X Large is one of the true originators of streetwear, not just in the sense of one particularly famous item or another, but in the sense that their vision defined the entire aesthetic. Check out any 90s movie where a group of diverse “cool kids” are wearing similar “alternative” but not readily assignable to a particular category clothing like work shirts, striped polos, baggy pants, and logo tees, for instance. X Large is responsible for that.
Here’s your chance to grab a place at the original cool kids table.
