The classic trench coat has, since its 19th century inception lived a double life of rubbing shoulders with the upper classes, and mucking it out in, well, the trenches. Originally developed for British army officers, as an alternative to old fashioned greatcoats, the outbreak of World War I quickly put the functional aspects of the new design to use.
The trench coat was replaced by shorter field jackets during World War II, but the design lived on as a fashion staple.
Carhartt’s pearson trench coat combines the fashion side of the Work In Progress label’s style-minded cuts with the functionality of rugged, water repellent fabric.
