The story of Bill Bowerman ruining a perfectly good waffle maker, but creating a touchstone of sneaker history is well known, but the iconic Waffle Racer didn’t spring to life fully formed, like Venus on the half shell. For the 1972 U.S. Olympic Trials, marathoner Bruce Mortenson wore an experimental, hand built form of the design, which came to be known as the Moon Shoe, in honor of the imprint left by the sole, which resembled the astronaut footprints left on the moon.
Keeping in tune with the ambitiously innovative spirit of the Moon Shoe, Nike presents the all-new Moon Racer. A refined, Cortez inspired take on the Moon Shoe’s upper sits atop a contemporary jewel of Nike running technology, the React sole. The lunar theme carries over to the Moon Racer’s insole, which sports a lunar landscape graphic print.
