There are shoes that require very little in the way of backstory. While this Air Force 1 Hi does have an interesting one, it is part of an early “color of the month” series of releases that greatly expanded the pop cultural awareness of the shoe beyond it’s initial basketball release. It’s difficult to imagine now, but in those days, getting your hands on pair of Air Force 1 was something that took some serious dedication.
Thankfully for current fans, Nike is now fully aware of the icon they have on their hands. Just the words “Carolina blue” and “uptown” would be enough to stoke enthusiasm for this shoe. Nike’s efforts have made both of those very specific, geographical references resonate with millions of people who have never set foot in Chapel Hill or in New York.
The combination of the two is exactly the kind of timeless style that has kept people lining up for the Air Force 1 since 1982.
