After the Air Max 95 revolutionized sneaker design, the unspoken question that hung in the air was, how exactly do you follow up such a game changing, impactful design. While the first follow up, the Air Max 96, worked in the same neighborhood as the 95, the next year’s model, the Air Max 97 turned heads immediately with its sleek, ultra modern, metallic silver look.Depending on whom you ask, the design for the Air Max 97 was inspired by Japanese bullet trains, (hence the “silver bullet” nickname) the aluminum finishes applied to mountain bikes, and the rippling waves made by raindrops on standing water. Whatever inspired the Air Max 97, the shoe looked like it had been dropped off directly from the future. The silver colorway was the first impression, but the debut of the full-length Air sole, and the hidden lacing helped make the Air Max 97 a classic on par with the 95.
The Air Max 97 Premium opts for an elegant, vision of the future. The use of premium materials brings a stately, fashion focused feel to this icon of sleekness. This season, Nike releases two new Premium iterations, coming in Black and Hero Blue colorways. Featuring some new design alterations, such as the bold heel and tongue loop branding, this design is truly state of the art.
