First released in 1998, the New Balance 801 was truly ahead of its time. Originally marketed and debuting as an all-terrain shoe, it more than lived up to that plea, becoming one of the first sneakers to combine both running and trail elements into one single silhouette. Although the 801 quickly became a huge hit within the boarders of New York, it did not necessarily rise to fame until the 1999 SLAM magazine cover. The cover featured New Jersey Nets point guard, Stephon Marbury, rocking the 801s original colorway in a legendary feature entitled “STEPHON MARBURY: MONEY. POWER. RESPECT”. From this article, the 801s became internationally desired.
Now, after a long 20 years in the vault (with a brief re-release in 2014), the New Balance 801 is finally ready for its comeback. Sporting its original Gray, Yellow and Navy colorway, along with its classic ‘90s shape, the shoe is essentially a perfected replica. The hybrid-like shoe also includes a synthetic leather, nubuck and textile upper which is equipped to tackle all conditions and terrains. It is then finished off with ABZORB cushioning technology and a rugged rubber outsole, ensuring comfortability while providing practicality. Cop now, close your eyes, and transport back to the days where life just seemed so much more simple.
